Headlining the first
day of the DNC were President Bill Clinton and his
wife, the New York State senate candidate Hillary Clinton. Leading up to the
convention all the pundits were talking endlessly about the Clintons
"stealing the show" from Al Gore a well-founded fear, but so what?
After
eight years in the White House shouldn't they be allowed to get up there and
strut their stuff for an hour or so? Besides, this "show" needed some
stealing, since every speaker leading up to the Clintons was an insufferable
BORE.
After a big build-up by
a gaggle of cheer-leading female Democratic
senators, Hillary came out to a thunderous welcome. Democratic delegates
tend to be more left-leaning than the average party member (just as your
average GOP delegate leans more to the right), and this was made obvious by
the half-hearted applause any mention that Hillary or anyone else
made
to our booming economy received, as opposed to the squeals of approval at the
mention of any new or expanded federal government program. Boo to MAKING
money; HOORAY for spending it!
Hillary also got a lot of support from the crowd when she praised both
Tipper Gore AND Vice Presidential candidate Joe Leiberman for their past and
present censorship campaigns, which made me wonder: what EXACTLY does it mean
to be a "liberal" these days? These staunch defenders of the status quo
aren't liberals they're CONTROL FREAKS!
