Hype? "Wim wam," you say? In reality, Indy needs Sarah Fisher more than Juan Montoya. The Indy Racing League (IRL) has lost a lot of star power to retirement, like A.J. Foyt, Rick Mears, Mario Andretti. The 500 also has to deal with recent consumer competition for the first time ever, since Indianapolis is now home to the Colts and Pacers, not to mention NASCAR's national presence.

But its real problem is rival CART (Championship Auto Racing Teams Inc.), with whom Indy track owner Tony George has a bitter feud. George took over the track from his dad and set down rules that half the world's best racers won't follow. The Mario Andrettis of CART resent this modern day Georgie Amberson's dictates, and in a state where they won't even agree with you what time it is, this could go on a long time.

And this feud is one reason sassy Sarah Fisher and Indiana Andy Hillenberg even got near the starting thirty-three this year! It's like having a World Series where only the National League can show up because the American League wants to use aluminum bats.

The field is set Sucksters ... Next: RACE DAY 2000!
