With magazine-trade snipers constantly picking at The New Yorker's hilarious efforts to turn a profit, it's not surprising that the editorial cruise concept - which was designed as part of an advertising package for Crystal Cruise - has brought particular scorn. The New Yorker has tried to put a respectable journalistic spin on things, but there's something defensive and something forlornly hopeful in the way the magazine's cruise advert brags, "It could single-handedly change the world's literacy rate."
