TITLE: ON THE ROPES
CLIENT: Skip Humphrey for Governor
EXPLANATION: Unlike New York's "Grandpa" Al Lewis, in Minnesota, a
former entertainer turned third-party gubernatorial candidate
ended up a force to be reckoned with. Just days before the election,
former pro wrestler Jesse "The Body" Ventura, the Reform Party's
Midwestern macho man, polled surprisingly high - 21 percent - against state
attorney
general Hubert "Skip" Humphrey III (D) and St. Paul Mayor Norm Coleman (R).
Frightened that Ventura was eating into his base, Humphrey's campaign gurus
devised the following rather peevish yet oddly restrained ad and sprang it
at the 11th hour.
RESULTS: Ineffective. It may seem tame by national standards, but those
Minnesotans are really weird. Did you ever see Fargo?
